of david petraeus. this is after investigators found substantial classified information on her computer and the glaering question tonight is did broadwell's relationship with david petraeus give her access to these classified documents? "outfront" tonight, cnn national security contributor, fran townsend. she's also a member of the cia external add voizry committee and knowed a lot about what it means to have top clearance. the name of the fbi agent, frederick humphries, who was by the way, involved in foiling a terrorist attack in 1999. very accomplished fbi agent. what do you know about the relationship? >> it's interesting. apparently, i understand from a senior law enforcement official that humphries and jill kelley met when she attended the citizens academy. this is a sort of familiarization program that the fbi runs across the country in communities to familiarize people and sort of get them to understand the work of the fbi in their community so it's part of the see something, say something. this is another mean of the fbi reaching out in local communities. jill kelley ateptended

could have been an attempt to blackmail david petraeus as head of the the cia. they began to investigate and that is when they came across information about the affair with paula broadwell. however, we also cannot confirm that paula broadwell sent those threatening e-mails to jill kelly, the family friend of petraeus. there's no indication that jill kelly was having an affair with petraeus. the affair that general petraeus admitted to was with paula broadwell and his biographer, but what is interesting, what is not clear at this point is who wrote the threatening e-mails that started this daisy-chain event and may not, according to both families, may not have been paula broadwell herself. this has been painted as a fight between two women over general petraeus, but it's not clear that's what it was at all. >> harris: and that's really the problem, right, jennifer? because if somehow or another someone had gained access to either her e-mail and/or that of general petraeus, that is a compromise. that is, it's not what you want. that's access that might be nefarious and that's why they were

in today for fredricka whitfield. we have new information on the david petraeus resignation. the highly dedicated army colonel quit after announcing he had an extramarital affair. it's an fbi affair that's sounding alarms. the fbi was investigating some suspicious e-mails and found some e-mails between paula broadwell and david petraeus. broadwell is the woman who wrote his biography. the fbi looks to see whether his communications had been compromised, and they said they had not been. now, petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it's not clear if broadwell has been questioned and if she will be. a u.s. official said petraeus was never a target of an investigation and that a tip about an affair led to that probe. now, general petraeus was scheduled to testify next week about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. now what happens now that he's gone? suzanne kelly is in washington with that part of this big story. >> susan, as washington reels from the announcement not only that david petraeus is stepping down from the post, but also from the admission he was having an extramarital

to the resignation of david petraeus. here's the latest on the players and the events. here's how it all started. it started when jill kelly, a friend of general petraeus, contacted the fbi about threatening emails she said she received from another woman. that woman was paula broadwell who wrote petraeus's biography. she said she used to jog with the general while he was leading the war in afghanistan. they got to know each other. the fbi checked petraeus's e-mail accounts and said they had not been compromised. petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it is unclear if broadwell has been questioned. i want to bring in joel kelly, her husband released this statement earlier today. this is the statement. it says, "we and our family have been friends with general petraeus and his family for over five years. we respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children." we are also now learning that paula broadwell revealed information regarding the investigation of the attack on the consulate in benghazi, li a libya. a video of her speaking in denver has now surface odd

's tough to follow. tonight, we will sort it all out. last night, the then cia director david petraeus resigned when word broke that he had had an affair with his biographer paula broadwell that affair surfaced after the fbi started investigating paula broadwell for allegedly sending threatening emails to another woman. that woman's name is jill kelli. she a friend of david petraeus family. a wealthy, married socialite with lots of ties to military bigs in tamp parks home of central command. jill kelley's family is lebanese american. they immigrated from lebanon during the 1970s. during the fbi's broadwell investigation, agents uncovered 20 to 30,000 pages of documents. mostly emails they tell us between jill kelley and general john allen. is he also married. he is the man who took over for general petraeus as our commander in afghanistan. a senior defense official describes those emails between general allen and jill kelley as flirtatious in nature. the shear volume of emails means they were potentially exchanging an average of 41 pages of emails each day every day for years. while ge
